The Holy Assumption Cathedral, located in Makhachkala, owes its name to the icon of the Assumption of the Virgin. Today it is the only church in its kind – in the territory of Makhachkala, in addition to this cathedral, there are no more Orthodox churches.
Previously, there was still the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky. This temple also accepted the Orthodox believers, but in the fifties of the twentieth century it ceased to exist.
The Holy Assumption Cathedral was built from 1905 to 1906. But the story of his appearance is much longer and interesting. At first in 1980, the efforts of the inhabitants of the village of Petrovsk-Caucasian was erected by a wooden temple. But the number of Orthodox in these parts has constantly increased. And a small wooden church was not enough. Then the parishioners asked the government to build a larger temple. The collection of financial resources has begun. Nicholas II was among the first to donate a thousand rubles.
After the revolution, the church ceased its work. The building was not empty – a store was arranged here, a warehouse. And only in 1943 the Church again became a church, and the believers were able to visit services again. Then a rite of consecration of the temple was carried out. In 1969, Patriarch Alexy I blessed the transfer to the Makhachkala Cathedral of the iconostasis from the Moscow Menshikova Tower.
