Originally known as Charles-Town, Nassau is the modern face of the Bahamas. Although in some areas it is dirty, the historical taste of the island is preserved.
Most of this atmosphere comes from its development from 1787 to 1834, when many of the most beautiful buildings of the colonial city were built. Before that, Nassau was largely a village refuge for pirates, kapers and pests.
After the alternation of periods of decline and prosperity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the peak in trade and construction after the Second World War contributed to the formation of Nassau as a global center for the development of tourism and finance.
By the mid-1950s, with the expansion of work to deepen the harbor and the construction of the international airport, Nassau began to accept more than a million visitors a year. Ten years later, after the construction of the Paradise Island bridge and the development of Kabel Beach, there were twice as many tourists.
